City Directories

City and county directories have been published since the early 1800's. They are an alphabetical listing of inhabitants, arranged by name, address, and occupation.  They generally include businesses, churches, cemeteries, schools, funeral homes, post offices, courts, hospitals, benevolent associations, and newspapers.  Some directories list wives, whether a woman is a widow (including name of husband), they may also list marriages and deaths in the previous year.
